چکیده

Combined analysis of high-resolution seismic images of the Alaska and Cascadia subduction zones reveals where metamorphic fl uids are released. Both images show the subducted oceanic crust as a dipping low-velocity layer with a clear termination depth. However, in Alaska the crust is thicker (15–20 km compared to 8 km) and terminates at greater depth (120 km compared to 40 km) than in Cascadia. Based on metamorphic reaction estimates and geodynamic models, we demonstrate that the termination depth corresponds to eclogitization of the crust triggered by dehydration of water-bearing minerals, and that the location of this reaction is dependent on the thermal structure of the subducted slab.

Do Trench Sediments Affect Great Earthquake Occurrence in Subduction Zones?

-Seismic energy release is dominated by the underthrusting earthquakes in subduction zones, and this energy release is further concentrated in a few subduction zones. While some subduction zones are characterized by the occurrence of great earthquakes, others are relatively aseismic. This variation in maximum earthquake size between subduction zones is one of the most important features of glob...

Simple Kinematics of Subduction Zones

Two main types of subduction zones can be distinguished: (1) those where the subduction hinge migrates away from the upper plate; and (2) those in which the subduction hinge migrates toward the upper plate. Apart from a few exceptions, this distinction seems to apply particularly for W-directed subduction zones and Eor NE-directed subduction zones, respectively. Moreover, the rate of subduction...

Some remarks on subduction zones

The rate of subduction is larger than the convergence rate along W-directed subduction zones, whereas it is smaller along Eor NE-directed subduction zones. Along Wdirected slabs, the subduction rate is the convergence rate plus the slab retreat rate, which tends to equal the backarc extension rate. Along Eor NE-directed slabs, the subduction rate is decreased by the shortening in the upper plat...

Why subduction zones are curved

[1] We give an explanation for the polarity, localization, shape, size, and initiation of subduction zones on Earth. By considering a soft, thin, curved lithospheric cap with either elastic or viscous rheology supported by a thick, nearly incompressible mantle, we find two different characteristic subduction geometries arise depending on boundary conditions: (1) plate boundaries where subductio...

Geoid and topography over subduction zones: The effect of phase transformations

[1] The association between local maxima in the geoid and subduction zones is examined. While it is well known that subduction zones are associated with broad local maxima in the geoid at spherical harmonic degrees 4–9, there is an impressive correlation between back arc geoid maxima at the 5000 km length scale (i.e., spherical harmonic degrees >9) and subduction zones with the exception of the...
